Sustained Performance Over Time With 15" Class Notebooks

There is a common misconception that mobile computing systems outfitted with the same processor, GPU, memory, and storage configurations, will offer nearly identical performance. While this may have been the case years ago, dynamic clock and power gating technologies incorporated into modern processor platforms are significantly impacted by thermal and power constraints – especially with long, sustained workloads that place heavy demands on a system’s CPU and GPU resources. One system may be able to sustain peak performance over long durations due to a robust cooling solution and optimized power profile tuned for the specific hardware configuration, while another of seemingly similar form factor and specifications may be forced to throttle relatively quickly because its cooling solution has become thermally saturated or a specific power threshold has been exceeded.

In the following analysis, we will evaluate the sustained performance over time of similarly-configured 15” class notebooks, 2-in-1s, and convertible devices from Dell, HP, Lenovo, Asus, and Microsoft, using a readily-available 3D content creation workload.
